The stacked competition and incredible downhill course on the steps of Jiangwan Plaza proved to be the ultimate challenge for some of the top street skaters in the world. The right line, trick selection, speed, quickness and style would all be necessary for one of these skaters to rise to the top. Tom Asta took an early lead with a flurry of quick technical tricks. Chris Cole got a slight injury on the first run, but still managed to please the crowd and his peers by playing around with what would otherwise be insane tricks. Jagger, the recent Tampa Am winner, was hungry and smiling and he let it all out on the course. Including holding onto a high speed kickflip front board over the A Frame gap to rail. And that stylish kickflip to fake on the steep bank? Passion picked that trick. Evan Smith’s high vibe helped him barrel through the course and blast off of the bump at the top of the hubba and 360 nosegrab down the gap, but it was the wheelbite that got him coming out of a high-speed back tail on the bump to Jersey barrier. Evan rose with all smiles though. It really looked like everyone was enjoying the perfectly challenging setup and having a good time feeding off of each other in the spirit of competition and fun, while allowing the best of skateboarding to come out of them. Felipe Gustavo summoned up something fierce with a powerful, steady paced run, stomping on everything he popped. Like a rolling train with a lot of momentum, his quite confidence was heard by all in attendance.
But perhaps one of the most enjoyable parts of this heated round of street skating with the worlds top pros was watching a 13 year old from Indonesia crush it. Sanggoe Tanjung made his way through 25 competitors, the chosen best skaters from 11 different countries, to find himself face to face with the best. and he ripped. Half the size of what the course was designed to compliment, Sanggoe laid it down lightly, from top to bottom, enjoying every bit. Reminding us of how lucky we are to be a part of this. Definitely fun to watch.
Heated competition, the right course at the perfect location, and a lot of passion and fun, the KWEG Street On Street Final was a good contest.
